Proton has rolled out a set of updates to its Proton Drive service, introducing significant speed improvements, new mobile capabilities, and expanded functionality for its end-to-end encrypted spreadsheet tool, Proton Sheets.
Proton says file uploads on iOS are now up to 60% faster, while web uploads have improved by up to 30% and downloads by as much as 70%. File sharing workflows have also been optimized, with downloads from shared folders seeing up to 70% faster speeds and uploads improving by roughly 30%, including for users accessing shared content without a Proton account.
According to Proton, these improvements are largely the result of backend changes, including the introduction of a shared software development kit (SDK) that standardizes file handling across its apps.
Proton AG, a Swiss company known for its encrypted email and VPN services, has been expanding its ecosystem of privacy-focused tools over the past few years. Proton Drive is positioned as a secure alternative to mainstream cloud storage providers, offering end-to-end encryption for stored files and shared content.
The latest update also introduces several mobile-focused features. On both Android and iOS, users can now save files directly to Proton Drive without needing to download them first. A built-in document-scanning feature has also been added, allowing users to capture and store sensitive documents, such as passports, within the app.

The mobile photo gallery has been updated with faster loading and smoother navigation, while Android users gain support for uploading entire folders in a single action.
In parallel, Proton has expanded the capabilities of Proton Sheets, its encrypted spreadsheet editor introduced in late 2025. New features include support for OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) files (currently in beta), hidden sheets, additional “paste special” options, and expanded formula support, including the =SWITCH function and custom formulas for conditional formatting and data validation.

Proton underlined that these updates do not change how spreadsheet data is handled. Data security, particularly in areas such as data mining, ad targeting, and AI training, remains uncompromising. Proton Sheets continues to apply end-to-end encryption to spreadsheet content, preventing the company from accessing user data.
The company also confirmed that development is ongoing for additional features, including a long-awaited native Linux client for Proton Drive, which remains one of the most requested additions from its user base.
