Mozilla to Retire Monitor Plus, Refocuses on Core Privacy Services

Mozilla has announced it will shut down Monitor Plus, its data broker scanning and removal service, on December 17, 2025.

The decision marks a strategic shift toward prioritizing core privacy tools, while Mozilla Monitor’s free breach alert service will continue uninterrupted with expanded features.

Mozilla explains that existing Monitor Plus users will retain access to scan results and data broker protections until the shutdown date. After December 17, all Monitor Plus data, including data broker scan results and user-submitted information, will be permanently deleted. Mozilla emphasized its commitment to privacy by clarifying that no user action is needed for refunds, and that all Monitor Plus subscribers will receive automatic prorated refunds for any unused subscription time.

Monitor Plus launched as a paid add-on to Mozilla Monitor, offering subscribers the ability to run scans against known data broker sites and request automatic data removal. While the feature aimed to offer users greater control over their personal information, Mozilla has now opted to reallocate those resources toward tools and services that it believes will deliver a broader impact in the digital privacy space.

In addition to refunding standalone Monitor Plus subscribers, Mozilla will adjust its Privacy Protection Plan bundle, which combines Mozilla VPN, Firefox Relay, and Monitor Plus. Users in this plan will be transitioned to a new, lower-priced bundle excluding Monitor Plus but retaining the VPN and email masking services. They will also receive prorated refunds for the Monitor Plus portion of their subscriptions. Those preferring to cancel entirely can contact support for a full refund.

Mozilla Monitor, originally launched in 2018 as Firefox Monitor, is a free breach alerting tool powered by data from Have I Been Pwned. It notifies users when their email addresses appear in known data breaches and provides step-by-step mitigation guidance. As part of the service update, all users can now monitor up to 20 email addresses, a feature previously limited or tied to premium plans.

For users with ongoing removal requests through Monitor Plus, Mozilla confirms that initial deletion requests have already been sent to data brokers. However, users are advised to follow up manually if they wish to ensure compliance. Most data broker websites include opt-out links labeled “Do Not Sell My Personal Info” or “Exercise My Data Privacy Rights,” which can be used to submit direct removal requests.
