After opening with a brief look at space flights in the past few decades, Mr. Rees argues that advancements in robotics and miniaturization are diminishing the practical case for human spaceflights. Unlike humans, machines can endure extreme conditions and operate with unmatched efficiency, making them ideal for exploring distant planets and moons. Robotic missions should, therefore, take priority, while human space travel should be the preserve of private ventures that cater to thrill-seekers.
Importantly, these adventurers, including those entertaining plans to terraform and colonize Mars, would play a pivotal role in humanity’s long-term future – to spearhead the post-human era, another major theme in Mr. Rees’s talk. Indeed, if humans themselves are an early stage in the emergence of the wonderful complexity of the cosmos, are we simply a stepping stone for something greater?
