Surfshark has announced two new privacy-enhancing tools, Multi IP and an upgraded Rotating IP, aimed at making online tracking significantly harder for advertisers, data brokers, and surveillance actors.
These new features, now live for macOS users, leverage the company’s Nexus technology to offer session-based IP variability and seamless IP rotation within selected regions.
The new Multi IP feature assigns a different IP address for every website or session a user opens, making fingerprinting and cross-site tracking extremely difficult. In contrast, the Rotating IP function periodically changes the user’s IP address every five minutes, offering a more traditional obfuscation method ideal for ongoing sessions. Both options can be set to rotate within a specific country or globally, depending on user preference.
These innovations are powered by Surfshark Nexus, the company’s patented infrastructure built on Software Defined Networking (SDN). Nexus interlinks all of Surfshark’s VPN servers into a single, unified global network, allowing seamless transitions between IPs and servers without dropping the VPN tunnel. This architecture also supports continuous IP changes across locations while maintaining a stable VPN connection, enabling advanced features like Multi IP to function reliably.
Surfshark is a privacy-focused VPN provider known for its robust set of security tools, including CleanWeb (ad-blocking), GPS spoofing, and now Nexus-powered dynamic IP features.
The upgraded Rotating IP builds on existing functionality by offering smoother and more customizable location control. Users remain in the same region or country, but their IP address cycles automatically, which frustrates attempts at behavioral profiling. This is particularly useful for individuals facing high levels of surveillance or for those who simply want to reduce their digital footprint.
The Multi IP option, on the other hand, represents a more aggressive privacy posture. Instead of routing all traffic through a single IP as with standard VPNs, Multi IP assigns a distinct IP for each new connection. Whether accessing a bank, a news site, or a messaging platform, each destination sees a different source IP. This significantly weakens attempts to link sessions or user behavior across websites.
Both features are intended for users with high privacy requirements, including journalists, researchers, activists, or privacy enthusiasts. However, Surfshark warns that frequent IP changes, especially at a global level, may interfere with some apps and websites that are sensitive to changing network conditions.
For now, the features are available only on macOS, accessible under Advanced Settings in the Surfshark application. There’s no announced timeline yet for availability on Windows, Android, or iOS platforms.
